Product Introduction
Color Masterbatch, also known as color granules or colorant, is a new type of special colorant for polymer materials, also called pigment preparation. Color masterbatch is mainly used in plastics. It consists of three basic elements: pigment or dye, carrier, and additives. It is an aggregate made by uniformly loading an extraordinary amount of pigment into resin, and can be called pigment concentration. Therefore, its coloring power is higher than that of the pigment itself. During processing, a small amount of color masterbatch is mixed with uncolored resin to achieve the designed pigment concentration in the resin or product.
Basic Components
1. Pigments or Dyes
Pigments are divided into organic and inorganic pigments.
Common organic pigments include: Phthalocyanine Red, Phthalocyanine Blue, Phthalocyanine Green, Fast Red, Macromolecular Red, Macromolecular Yellow, Permanent Yellow, Permanent Violet, Azo Red, etc.
Common inorganic pigments include: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium Dioxide, Carbon Black, Iron Oxide Red, Iron Oxide Yellow, etc.
2. Carrier
This is the matrix of the masterbatch. Specialized masterbatches generally use the same resin as the product resin as the carrier, as the compatibility between the two is best, but the carrier's flowability must also be considered.
3. Dispersant
This promotes uniform dispersion of the pigment and prevents further aggregation. The dispersant's melting point should be lower than the resin, and it should have good compatibility with the resin and good affinity with the pigment. The most commonly used dispersants are: low molecular weight polyethylene wax and stearates.
4. Additives
These include flame retardants, brighteners, antibacterial agents, antistatic agents, antioxidants, etc. Unless specifically requested by the customer, masterbatches generally do not contain these additives.
Advantages
1. Improved Pigment Dispersion in Finished Products: Pigments require refining during masterbatch production to enhance dispersibility and tinting strength. The carrier of the specialized masterbatch is compatible with the type of plastic used in the finished product, ensuring good matching. After melting, the pigment particles disperse well within the plastic.
2. Enhanced Pigment Chemical Stability: Direct use of pigments leads to moisture absorption and oxidation due to direct contact with air during storage and use. Masterbatch, however, isolates the pigment from air and moisture via a resin carrier, maintaining its quality over a long period.
3. Stable Product Color: Masterbatch particles are similar in size to resin particles, making metering more convenient and accurate. They do not adhere to containers during mixing and mix more evenly with the resin, ensuring stable addition amounts and thus consistent product color.
4. Protected Operator Health: Pigments are typically powdery and can easily become airborne during addition and mixing, potentially affecting operator health if inhaled.
5. Maintained Environmental Cleanliness.
6. Easy to Use
Heat Resistance
The heat resistance rating of a special color masterbatch is generally compatible with the plastic used in the product. It can be used with confidence at normal temperatures. However, discoloration may occur to varying degrees under the following conditions: the temperature exceeds the normal range, or the downtime is too long.
What is the difference between granulation coloring and masterbatch coloring?
Compared to granulation coloring, masterbatch coloring has the following advantages:
1. Coloring and product processing are completed in one step, avoiding the heating process of plastic during granulation coloring, which is beneficial to the quality of plastic products.
2. It simplifies the production process of plastic products.
3. It can save a significant amount of energy.
Will products colored with masterbatch not fade?
No product is absolutely colorfast. Products colored with masterbatch may still fade, but the degree varies depending on the product's grade; some are more noticeable, while others are difficult to detect.
Color Masterbatch Classification
By Carrier: Such as PE color masterbatch, PP color masterbatch, ABS color masterbatch, PVC color masterbatch, EVA color masterbatch, etc.
By Application: Such as injection molding color masterbatch, blow molding color masterbatch, spinning color masterbatch, etc. Each type can be further divided into different grades, such as:
1. High-Grade Injection Molding Color Masterbatch: Used for cosmetic packaging boxes, toys, appliance housings, and other high-grade products.
2. Ordinary Injection Molding Color Masterbatch: Used for general daily-use plastic products, industrial containers, etc.
3. High-Grade Blown Film Color Masterbatch: Used for blow molding coloring of ultra-thin products.
4. Ordinary Blown Film Color Masterbatch: Used for blow molding coloring of general packaging bags and woven bags.
5. Spinning Color Masterbatch: Used for coloring textile fibers during spinning; the pigment particles are fine, the concentration is high, the coloring power is strong, and the heat and light resistance is good.
6. Low-Grade Color Masterbatch: Used to manufacture low-grade products where color quality requirements are not high, such as trash cans and low-grade containers.
Applications
Widely used in polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, ABS, nylon, PC, PMMA, PET and other resins to produce colorful fibers, clothing, daily plastics, wires and cables, household appliances, agricultural films, auto parts, health care equipment and other products.
